Youth Hockey

For 2021, youth players are those who are at high school but were born before 1 January 2008, as well as those who are who are out of school but were born after 31 December 2002.  High school players who were born after 31 December 2007, as well as all primary schools players irrespective of age, fall into our Junior age group.

At Nova Hockey Club we believe that club hockey is real hockey and the sooner we help young players get to grips with it, the better.  A high school career lasts at most five years while a life-time career can last forty years or more, so it just makes sense to get used to playing senior hockey as soon as possible!  The nice spin-off is that it does wonders for their school hockey.  Youth players play in the same (adult) leagues as our senior teams, but we adapt our coaching to focus on their unique developmental needs.  At training we aim to ensure that each young player either learns a new skill or improves on an existing skill and at matches we gradually introduce them to match conditions to ensure that they are not overwhelmed.

In previous years training took place at the Pretoria West campus of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), from 19:00 to 21:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  We are hoping to start pre-season training for 2021 during February at those times, but we have not yet received final Covid-19 directives from the SA Hockey Association, the Northerns Blues Hockey Association and the Tshwane University of Technology, all of which we hope to receive very soon.  Once we have clarity on what is expected of us, we will make a decision regarding training days and times.  Please check this website or our Facebook page regularly to remain up to date!  (Please take note that club hockey and schools hockey are controlled by different government departments and that different rules regarding the resumption of training and matches may apply.)

Whether you currently play hockey elsewhere or not, or even if you've never played hockey before, you are welcome to join in our training sessions to see whether you like the club before you join – at no cost and with no obligation to join.  NB: while you need not join before coming to your first session, we just ask that you please let us know you're coming so that we can plan adequately.

If you want to get involved, please Contact Us to discuss it before you Join.  Be sure to visit our Fees page too.
