Interested? Then please come and take part in some training sessions to see what you think of us – at no cost and with no obligation to join. It doesn't matter how old you are, whether you currently play hockey elsewhere or not, or even if you've never played hockey before, everyone is welcome at Nova. NB: you need not register or join before coming to your first session, we only ask that you please Contact Us to let us know you're coming so that we can plan adequately.
Adult players who are out of school fall under our Senior section. Ages currently range from 18 to over 50 and we truly provide for everyone who wants to play hockey – from the competitive players who play for our first teams, to beginners who are still learning, to players who just want to remain active and have fun with like-minded people.
Training takes place at Hoërskool Oos-Moot in Villieria – women on Mondays and Wednesdays from 19:30 to 21:00 and men on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 19:30 to 21:00. According to the preliminary league schedule, training will continue until the end of August.
Northerns outdoor league matches usually (but not always) take place on Saturday afternoons for women and on Sundays for men. Dates for the 2026 outdoor league have not yet been finalised but should be from mid-April to the end of August with a break for the July school holidays. An indoor league is tentatively being planned for October – more information will be made available later in the year.
High school players, as well as under-18 players who have left school, form part of our Youth section and are therefore generally aged 14 to 18. At Nova Hockey Club we believe club hockey is real hockey and the sooner we help young players get to grips with it, the better. Our youth players train and play alongside our senior (adult) players but, during training and matches, we pay specific attention to their unique developmental needs.

Primary school players take part in our Junior programme. Because hockey is a very technical sport it is important to ensure that young players are taught correct techniques and skills, on an artificial surface, from day one in order to lay a solid foundation from which they may develop to their full potential. Nova Hockey Club's junior programme is all about getting players to love and enjoy the sport by focusing on developing their individual skills and abilities. The programme is open to boys and girls of all skill levels – from absolute beginners to accomplished players.
Training takes place on Fridays from 16:30 to 18:00 at Pretoria-Noord Hoƫrskool's astro and we normally continue training until the last Friday of November. While the emphasis is on skills development, we do arrange friendly matches where the young players may put their skills into practice and we are looking at playing many more matches in 2026 than ever before.
Masters hockey is for women over the age of 30 or men over the age of 35. We currently only have a women's team but have already started working towards entering a men's team in 2027. The emphasis in masters hockey is very much on having fun and our ladies proved that by winning "Team of the Year" in 2025! Nova masters teams don't train but just pitch up and play, although many of them register to play and train with our senior teams too. Matches are played on Sunday mornings and are scheduled to start on 1 March and continue until September/October.
